There are two main processes for preparing refractory magnesium oxide powder from fused magnesia powder, namely, one-step calcination method and two-step calcination method. The specific processes are as follows:

1. Process flow of one-step calcination method: raw material (magnesite with certain requirements) → calcination (using coke in a rotary or shaft kiln, calcining at different temperatures) → different grades of magnesium powder

 

2. Process flow of two-step calcination method: raw material (magnesite with certain requirements) → light calcination (in suspension calcination kiln, rotary kiln, reverberatory furnace or fluidized bed furnace, using ashless fuel and calcining at different temperatures) → electric fused magnesia grinding powder (the finer the particle size, the higher the purity of magnesium powder) → secondary calcination (in shaft kiln or rotary kiln, calcining at different temperatures) → different grades of magnesium powder

 

According to the process of grinding refractory magnesium oxide, the lightly burned powder (about 200 meshes) is further calcined to produce magnesia after being pressed into a ball. The quality of the fused magnesia grinding powder is related to the body density of the pressing ball. In order to produce high-quality magnesia, in addition to the content of magnesium oxide, there is also the need to press the lightly burned powder into a high body density ball. To press into a high body density ball, it is necessary to regrind the lightly burned magnesium powder from about 200 meshes to over 400 meshes. In traditional processes, this work is typically accomplished using a ball mill plus a powder concentrator, which poses many problems:

1. Due to the fact that the grinding medium is steel balls and the material entering the grinding process is powdery (about 200 meshes), the noise is too high and the iron consumption is high, which has a large iron content in the finished magnesium powder (the iron content of the magnesium powder increases) and affects the product quality.

 

2. The grinding medium for ball mill electromechanical fused magnesia grinding powder contains nearly 100 tons of steel balls. When the mill is rotating, it has a large amount of useless work and high energy consumption.

 

The above two major issues have been plagued by high-purity magnesia production enterprises.
